Pit Fire

Arah and Elijah are having a great time in Jamie Stoke's outdoor studio learning how to wedge clay, handbuild and glaze their ceramic creations. As a special treat she invited a local potter to teach his method of pit firing. He dug a pit, filled it with sawdust, cow dung and the pots which the kids had burnished by rubbing the surface with a smooth rock until it was very shiny. Then the pit was filled with logs and set on fire. We had a pot luck to celebrate. When the pit cooled down a few days later, these beautiful pots emerged. (Are you getting the life analogy? Painful rubbing + garbage + poop + burning = beautiful). There is a sea dried anenome in the bottom of Arah's bowl.
